Hello again!
First off, I want to remind everyone that Thursday 3/30 is our class picture day! All students will be in the picture, so please have your child dress accordingly. Also, we have PE for specials that day, so your child may bring in clothes and/or shoes to change into before PE. Student individual portraits will NOT be taken unless you prepay. If you want to order still you can. Here is the link to the website. Be sure to use the code for Big Shanty! georgiaclassicimages.com/spring-samples/ Where it says to put in the school code, enter BSHANS17. GCI’s phone number is 770-428-3717. Milestones are coming up very soon! Does your child experience text anxiety? Help them allay their fears by giving them the chance to take a practice test! Your child will be able to see what kind of questions are on the test, and reassure themselves that they can do this! Here's the link for a practice test: gaexperienceonline.com Don't forget that the orange house party is on Friday, as is the 3rd quarter Eagle Eye celebration. Have a FANTASTIC spring break, and please keep your child reading every day during the break. If you go somewhere, have them take a little journal and keep a journal of the sights and experiences of their trip. If you have any questions or concerns you may email me. Ms. Ryan

Hello,
There are two volunteer opportunities that we need to have participation with. The first is our Carnival basket. We have a science theme this year, and here is the link for the Sign-Up Genius: www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e4cada72aa31-madscientist/9120725 PLEASE check it out and sign up for something as you are able. Also, I've been informed that next week is our class's time for volunteering in the Learning Commons. Here is the link for that. Thank you in advance for helping out! www.signupgenius.com/go/9040c4dafaa23aa8-mrs8 Happy first day of spring! I don't know about you, but I am ready for milder weather.
The Lucky Charms dance was a huge hit and I had a great time, as I'm sure your child did! It was wonderful to see what a large turnout of students and staff we had there. IMPORTANT announcement about club pictures! If your child is in a club, please make sure they bring or wear their club T-shirt on TUESDAY, March 21. All club pictures for the yearbook will be taken that day. If you haven't ordered your yearbook, or ordered your 5th grade T-shirt, deadlines have been extended for both. Please see the link in last week's post for the website for the yearbook. 5th grade T-shirts cost $7.50, and will only be ordered with a prepayment. No extra shirts will be ordered, so make sure you get your order in by March 23rd! We have two more weeks until Spring Break, and I plan on using every minute of that time to teach the students what they need to know. It is so difficult to try to make up the time your child misses when they aren't in class because we are on such a tight schedule rotating three classes. Please, please, please make sure your child comes to school every day, and try to schedule those doctor appointments during non-school hours. Thank you! Don't forget to check out the other pages of the blog for important curriculum and schedule updates. Have a great week! Ms. Ryan Mon., March 13 – Make a Difference Monday (Bring a reusable water bottle)
Tues., March 14 – Wear Your Green Weds., March 15 – Wear Your Waste (Trash collection throughout the day) Thurs., March 16 – Wear a Hat Made of Recycled Materials Fri., March 17 – Classroom Planting Watch this video to see how YOU can participate, Big Shanty style, in the Atlanta Science Festival. https://youtu.be/SNjlYPOjn_Q
After you've watched the video and have decided you want to take part, download the choice board from here: big_shanty_sf_choice_board.docx Hello!
WOW! The Ellis Island simulation day was so fantastic, and I was impressed with how many students dressed the part of an immigrant from the 1800s. They had a lot of fun, and I am so appreciative of the parents who came out to volunteer. A GIANT thank you to Mrs. Narayan, Mrs. Bowling, Mrs. Brower, and Mrs. Thiews. I'm beyond overwhelmed by the day. I will upload pictures to the blog this weekend. Another big thanks goes out to Gavin's mom, Mrs. Tica. She and Gavin gave a presentation to our class about their time spent in the Philippines during the winter break. It was fascinating to see their pictures and learn some cool facts about that country. IMPORTANT message about YEARBOOKS! Yearbook orders and 5th grade dedications are due March 15th (That's this upcoming week!) Yearbooks are $35 until the 15th. When the yearbooks come in, we may have a limited amount to sell CASH ONLY. Those will be $40. Parents can create their dedication for their 5th grader or anyone may order a yearbook at www.yearbookordercenter.com The school code is 20824. PTA will also accept a check or cash for the yearbook only. Again, that will only be available until March 15. Don't forget about the Lucky Charms St. Patrick's Day dance after school next Friday. The costs is only $5, and students will get a Menchies frozen yogurt with price of admission. The money we raise from the proceeds will help fund our PBIS and STEM teams here at Big Shanty. The Penny Wars were a big hit this year! I believe it was the GREEN team who won the war, so everyone in that house gets to eat a pizza lunch on the stage and also receives a "no homework" coupon. I believe that is it for the general announcements. Please navigate to the other pages (links to these pages are at the top of this page) to see important dates, and curriculum updates. Thanks for visiting and have a terrific week! Hello!
This coming Friday is our big Ellis Island simulation day beginning right at 8 a.m. Please make sure your child has their outfit on when they come to school as there will be no time for them to change before school. Since that is a SOAR day, 5th grade will NOT be having specials that day. I want to give a big shout out to Mrs. Bowling and Mrs. Brower who will man the station in my classroom. I'm so excited to see how this works! Last week a flyer went home regarding the Gimme 5! Campaign for education. Attached is a copy of that letter in case you missed it! 2017gimme5parentsletter.docx I hope you have a wonderful week! In case you missed the flyer about our 5th grade field trip I sent home before the break, here's a link so you can download it. The flyer explains how this field trip ties into our STEM standards. stem_back_kennesaw_2016_2017.jpg
Another flyer you may have missed is the one about the House Penny Wars. We are trying to raise money to support our PBSI and STEM teams here at BSI, and this is a fun way to do it. Kids can bring in any extra spare change they find laying around, and put the pennies in their jar to grow the total, or bills and silver coins to deplete the total from the other houses' jars. The winning team gets a pizza party on the stage at lunch time and a "no homework" pass to use! So, bring in those coins and let the Penny Wars go on! |
