Here we are; The last three days of school are upon us.
It has been a great year, and I have enjoyed all of your children. We have had a lot of fun experiences, as well as some challenging times, but through it all we grew as a family. It was great seeing those of you who came out for our fun party on Friday. Thank you for giving your time. The kids had a blast! Don't forget! Monday at 10:00 a.m. is our award ceremony. All nine 5th grade classes will be held at the same time, so if you want a good seat, get here early. Also, please be aware that due to circumstances beyond our control, no parents will be allowed to come into classrooms or come eat lunch with their child during the last two days of school. Again, thanks for a great year! I will see some of you on Monday.

Hello again,
On Wednesday, students will learn about the summer reading program put on through Cobb County. This is a great program to keep kids reading over the summer. On Thursday, we will have guidance, and that will be our last day of switching classes. On Friday, we will have our 5th grade party and walk of honor. Stations will begin at 10 a.m. for the party, yearbook signing is at 12:30, and the walk of honor is at 1:30. Here is some more information about Friday: The celebration will include food (cheese pizza, cookies, water), inflatable obstacle course, sponge toss, and water balloons. Corn hole, hula hoops, and popsicles will also be available. If your child will not eat the food being offered, they may bring their lunch or buy a cafeteria lunch. Your child needs to be sure to-wear their 5th grade shirt or a blue shirt, and they may also bring a towel with their name on it to use as a seat for lunch, and bring an extra dry shirt (just in case). The kids will also be signing yearbooks during specials, so they need to bring their yearbooks or a self-created memory book and a special pen that won't smear to sign yearbooks. They should NOT write on shirts! The 5th grade walk will begin at 1:30 on the blacktop area. Feel free to bring the family and a camera. The 5th graders will parade through the building and end in their classroom. You may check your child out in their homeroom. We should have a sign-out sheet for you to sign. On Monday, 5/22, we will be having our 5th grade award ceremony at 10:00 a.m. Afterward we will be eating lunch in our room. If you want to sign your child out after the award ceremony, you may do so. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will be having early release at 12:20. Please make sure your child knows how they are going home on the last two days of school. Also, on the last day of school, Wednesday, students are not to bring any backpacks on the bus. All papers and books will be sent home on Tuesday. If you have any questions, please email me. I'll be seeing some of you soon! Ms. Ryan From what I could tell, the kids worked very hard on their ELA Milestone tests. Next week we have 4 more days of testing. On Monday and Tuesday the kids will take the math tests, on Wednesday they will have science (2 sections), and on Thursday, they will have social studies (2 sections). Believe me, by Friday, they are going to want to have some fun. Good thing our carnival is next Friday!
Here is a link to a comprehensive math study guide that your child might find useful to work through over the weekend. We did some math review in my class on Friday, but this has much more information that is very helpful. schoolwires.henry.k12.ga.us/cms/lib08/GA01000549/Centricity/Domain/6119/5th%20Grade%20Math%20Georgia%20Milestones%20Common%20Core%20GPS%20Study%20Guide-2016.pdf As some of you know, I am one of the club leaders for our school's Junior Optimist International club. Our club, along with Baker's club, will be marching in the Big Shanty Festival parade this Saturday, April 22, at 9:30 a.m. Come on out for the parade, and stay for the festival. Thank you parents for sending in some exciting items for our science basket! I can't wait to see it all put together. Thanks to Mrs. Bowling for coordinating this between all 3 classes! Be sure to check out the other pages on my blog for more information. Ms. Ryan Hello!
The time is upon us for Milestone testing. I know your children have been prepared for these tests, and as I already told them, I have complete faith in them. The only thing I ask is that they get a GREAT night's sleep each night, and eat a HEALTHY and filling breakfast each morning. Students will not be having a snack in the middle of testing, so it is important that they fuel up! Another important message about the tests is that NO electronics will be allowed out in the class during this time. That means Fitbits, phones, and Smart watches. We will begin promptly at 8 a.m. each day, so please make sure your child is at school on time. Our school carnival is coming up soon! Next Friday will be a great day of celebration and fun! Please make sure you are sending in donations for our fantastic basket. If you did not get the email, here is the link for the sign up genius. www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e4cada72aa31-madscientist/9120725 I will be at the carnival selling cotton candy, so please stop by and say hello! One more big event we are hosting and very excited about is our Garden Gala on May 2nd. I hope that you all plan on coming here for food trucks, entertainment, and a spotlight on your child! The event is from 6 - 8 p.m. Mark your calendars NOW! Have a great week! Ms. Ryan Hello again,
I trust everyone had a relaxing yet fun spring break! Now that we are on the homestretch, I really need your help keeping your child motivated and doing their best every day. Also, attendance is very important. As we get ready to take the Milestones next week, please make sure that your child is present every day of testing. Speaking of testing, there will be no cell phones, tablets, smart watches, etc. allowed to be out or turned on during testing. All electronics must be stored, powered down, in the student's backpack. Have a great week! Ms. Ryan Hello again!
First off, I want to remind everyone that Thursday 3/30 is our class picture day! All students will be in the picture, so please have your child dress accordingly. Also, we have PE for specials that day, so your child may bring in clothes and/or shoes to change into before PE. Student individual portraits will NOT be taken unless you prepay. If you want to order still you can. Here is the link to the website. Be sure to use the code for Big Shanty! georgiaclassicimages.com/spring-samples/ Where it says to put in the school code, enter BSHANS17. GCI’s phone number is 770-428-3717. Milestones are coming up very soon! Does your child experience text anxiety? Help them allay their fears by giving them the chance to take a practice test! Your child will be able to see what kind of questions are on the test, and reassure themselves that they can do this! Here's the link for a practice test: gaexperienceonline.com Don't forget that the orange house party is on Friday, as is the 3rd quarter Eagle Eye celebration. Have a FANTASTIC spring break, and please keep your child reading every day during the break. If you go somewhere, have them take a little journal and keep a journal of the sights and experiences of their trip. If you have any questions or concerns you may email me. Ms. Ryan Hello,
There are two volunteer opportunities that we need to have participation with. The first is our Carnival basket. We have a science theme this year, and here is the link for the Sign-Up Genius: www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e4cada72aa31-madscientist/9120725 PLEASE check it out and sign up for something as you are able. Also, I've been informed that next week is our class's time for volunteering in the Learning Commons. Here is the link for that. Thank you in advance for helping out! www.signupgenius.com/go/9040c4dafaa23aa8-mrs8 Happy first day of spring! I don't know about you, but I am ready for milder weather.
The Lucky Charms dance was a huge hit and I had a great time, as I'm sure your child did! It was wonderful to see what a large turnout of students and staff we had there. IMPORTANT announcement about club pictures! If your child is in a club, please make sure they bring or wear their club T-shirt on TUESDAY, March 21. All club pictures for the yearbook will be taken that day. If you haven't ordered your yearbook, or ordered your 5th grade T-shirt, deadlines have been extended for both. Please see the link in last week's post for the website for the yearbook. 5th grade T-shirts cost $7.50, and will only be ordered with a prepayment. No extra shirts will be ordered, so make sure you get your order in by March 23rd! We have two more weeks until Spring Break, and I plan on using every minute of that time to teach the students what they need to know. It is so difficult to try to make up the time your child misses when they aren't in class because we are on such a tight schedule rotating three classes. Please, please, please make sure your child comes to school every day, and try to schedule those doctor appointments during non-school hours. Thank you! Don't forget to check out the other pages of the blog for important curriculum and schedule updates. Have a great week!
