Hello!
WOW! The Ellis Island simulation day was so fantastic, and I was impressed with how many students dressed the part of an immigrant from the 1800s. They had a lot of fun, and I am so appreciative of the parents who came out to volunteer. A GIANT thank you to Mrs. Narayan, Mrs. Bowling, Mrs. Brower, and Mrs. Thiews. I'm beyond overwhelmed by the day. I will upload pictures to the blog this weekend. Another big thanks goes out to Gavin's mom, Mrs. Tica. She and Gavin gave a presentation to our class about their time spent in the Philippines during the winter break. It was fascinating to see their pictures and learn some cool facts about that country. IMPORTANT message about YEARBOOKS! Yearbook orders and 5th grade dedications are due March 15th (That's this upcoming week!) Yearbooks are $35 until the 15th. When the yearbooks come in, we may have a limited amount to sell CASH ONLY. Those will be $40. Parents can create their dedication for their 5th grader or anyone may order a yearbook at www.yearbookordercenter.com The school code is 20824. PTA will also accept a check or cash for the yearbook only. Again, that will only be available until March 15. Don't forget about the Lucky Charms St. Patrick's Day dance after school next Friday. The costs is only $5, and students will get a Menchies frozen yogurt with price of admission. The money we raise from the proceeds will help fund our PBIS and STEM teams here at Big Shanty. The Penny Wars were a big hit this year! I believe it was the GREEN team who won the war, so everyone in that house gets to eat a pizza lunch on the stage and also receives a "no homework" coupon. I believe that is it for the general announcements. Please navigate to the other pages (links to these pages are at the top of this page) to see important dates, and curriculum updates. Thanks for visiting and have a terrific week! Hello!
This coming Friday is our big Ellis Island simulation day beginning right at 8 a.m. Please make sure your child has their outfit on when they come to school as there will be no time for them to change before school. Since that is a SOAR day, 5th grade will NOT be having specials that day. I want to give a big shout out to Mrs. Bowling and Mrs. Brower who will man the station in my classroom. I'm so excited to see how this works! Last week a flyer went home regarding the Gimme 5! Campaign for education. Attached is a copy of that letter in case you missed it! 2017gimme5parentsletter.docx I hope you have a wonderful week! In case you missed the flyer about our 5th grade field trip I sent home before the break, here's a link so you can download it. The flyer explains how this field trip ties into our STEM standards. stem_back_kennesaw_2016_2017.jpg
Another flyer you may have missed is the one about the House Penny Wars. We are trying to raise money to support our PBSI and STEM teams here at BSI, and this is a fun way to do it. Kids can bring in any extra spare change they find laying around, and put the pennies in their jar to grow the total, or bills and silver coins to deplete the total from the other houses' jars. The winning team gets a pizza party on the stage at lunch time and a "no homework" pass to use! So, bring in those coins and let the Penny Wars go on! Welcome back!
I certainly hope each of you had a wonderful winter break! For me, it was a week of sleeping and resting to get over a virus that had a hold of me for the entire time. At least I could sleep in and rest as much as I wanted to without feeling guilty! I am eager to get back to school and see all of the students and hear about everyone's break. I want to express my sincere thanks to those of you who took time to write me a note, or give me a gift during teacher appreciation week. It is so sweet when parents and students make that little effort to show how much they appreciate the hard work that I do every day. You all put a big smile on my face with your extra special gifts, and the lunch provided by the PTA was delicious. Thank you very much! REMINDERS:
I hope you all have a wonderful week! Please email me with any questions or concerns. Hello again,
Thank you for coming back to my blog. It makes me happy when I know you are reading this! Thank you so much to Ava S. for responding to my plea for more pencils! I also want to thank Logan, Josh, and Justin for their heartfelt handwritten cards! Don't forget that on Tuesday we will be handing out Valentine's cards after lunch. If you don't want to participate, you don't have to. If you have a box or bag that you'd like to put your cards in, please bring it in. Otherwise, I will have a bag that you can decorate before school on Tuesday. As this week is kindness week, we are having a door decorating contest here at school. I am so proud of the kids for doing this mostly by themselves. I love how they are working together to design and create this. Progress reports will go home on Tuesday. Don't forget that this is Hoops for Heart week. Our class will go to PE on Monday AND Tuesday to take part in this worthy cause. Don't forget that next week is our February break. Enjoy the rest of this week and next! Ms. Ryan Hello parents!
I have a few important reminders for you, and also ask that you check out the ELA page for resources to help your child with what we are learning, and other curriculum information. A lot of information has been sent home recently that you should be aware of. Last week we sent home your child's midterm data information sheet. This week there were two permission slips: one for the 5th grade field trip, and the other for the Human Growth and Development classes. There was also a half slip piece of purple paper with information about visits to and from Awtry and Palmer. I hope you've had a chance to see and sign everything. If your child has misplaced something, feel free to send me an email or note and I will send you a replacement. I'd also like to remind you that our book fair is next week, and we have some exciting and fun activities centered around that. A flyer went home outlining all the different opportunities there are. Last, but certainly not least, WE NEED PENCILS! I have completely run out of the pencils that were sent in at the beginning of the year, and students from all three classes come to me daily asking for pencils. Please check with your child to see if they need more pencils. I had been freely giving out pencils from my personal supply, but to be honest, I'm down to my last 10, so I won't be able to keep supplying students with pencils anymore. Thank you for attending to this matter. Thank you for visiting the blog. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, the best way to get in touch is via email: [email protected]. Have a great week! We are gearing up for our third STEM Day at Big Shanty on February 10th! Please help us by sending in donations of the following materials. We have only two more weeks until we are halfway through with our 3rd nine weeks. That's so hard to believe for some reason. Coming up the week of Feb. 5th is the book fair. See the attached flyer for more details.spring_2017_flyer.pdf I will be away on Thursday and Friday for my son's wedding, so if anything urgent comes up, please be sure to contact one of the other team teachers. I'll be back on the 30th. Please check the other pages for curriculum information. Hello again,
I hope you enjoyed a long weekend! This week we should have a regular schedule on all four days. I hope you saw the Talent Show audition form, as well as the Menchie's frozen yogurt pre-order form. The yogurt will be given out on Friday, Jan. 20th, and students have until this Thursday to turn in their $3.00. Please check the ELA page for curriculum updates, as well as rubrics. I have posted the Lucy Calkins' opinion writing rubric, and checklist, as well as the GA Milestones' opinion rubric. Have a great week! |
